A frantic scurry behind the curtains, missing technical equipment, and sponsors waiting at the gates – this was the unseen chaos just sixty minutes before the curtains rose on Resonance: The 12th GCGS Campus Film Festival.

Yet, moments later, the atmosphere shifted entirely. Walking down the red carpet as the host announced the commencement of the award ceremony, the initial panic gave way to something spectacular. Looking out at the sea of faces filling the Opera House, the stress of the past few months vanished.

Organising an event of this magnitude was a quest for genuine human warmth. We wanted to bridge the entire school community, and we did: 22 student films participated, spanning primary to high school across diverse programmes like IB and AP. Seeing the entire campus unite under one roof was the ultimate realisation of that dream.

Achieving that scale, however, meant conquering incredibly tense hurdles.

Early on, a quiet anxiety gripped the organising committee: we faced a severe shortage of submissions. Anticipating fewer than ten entries – not even enough to cover our planned award categories – the team spent weeks campaigning across campus, rallying students to pick up their cameras and share their stories.

Securing external sponsorship presented another mountain to climb. Navigating complex administrative guidelines required immense diplomacy. We had to learn how to pitch our vision effectively, persuading external partners whilst strictly respecting institutional boundaries.

When reality clashed with our plans, the experience reshaped my view of leadership. Rather than internalising the pressure, I learned the value of open communication, frequently raising candid concerns in our teacher-student group chat. These transparent discussions became our anchor, allowing us to deliberate constructively and reach a consensus whenever things went awry.

This collaborative spirit faced its ultimate test on the day of the grand finale. Whilst the film screenings had run successfully over the preceding two days, the award ceremony was our crown jewel. Resolving the final pre-show hurdles required absolute reliance on team coordination – entrusting vice-organisers to manage arriving guests while I finalised technical preparations inside the hall.

As the doors officially opened, the backstage friction dissolved into magic.

The night became a profound exchange of ideas, highlighted by a fascinating round-table conference with media industry experts. When the envelopes were finally opened, the electric excitement in the Opera House was palpable.

Guiding Resonance from a fragile list of ten potential submissions into a triumphant, cross-programme celebration taught me that true leadership isn't about flawlessly controlling everything. It is about steering through chaos, trusting your team, and having the resilience to adapt when the script changes mid-scene.
